Moving Out of Your Storage Unit: A Stress-Free Checklist
15-day notice, sorting, loading, final inspection, deposit refund: the checklist for vacating your storage unit in Bayonne or Anglet with no nasty surprises.
The renovation is done. The house is finally ready, or the cramped flat is now just a memory. Sometimes it's a move away from the Basque Country altogether. Whatever your story, handing back your storage unit marks the end of a chapter, and you'd like it to wrap up as smoothly as it began. Good news: with a little planning, it does. Here's what we tell our customers, in the order things actually happen.
Three weeks before: let the team know
Step one is to let us know. The notice period is 15 days before your preferred move-out date, and it starts on the day you tell us. We still recommend building in a few days of slack: the rental van or the friends who promised to help aren't always free exactly when you need them.
Your rent won't have you juggling the calendar either. It's paid at the start of the month, and if you leave on the 12th, the days you've paid beyond that are refunded pro rata. Only your first month of rental is due in full. So there's no point waiting until the 31st to "get your money's worth": pick the date that suits your move.
A question about your contract? The office at Les Arènes is open Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30am to 12:30pm and 2pm to 6pm. You'll be talking to the local team.
Sort first, load later
We see it all the time: the unit gets emptied in one go, everything heads to the new home… and half the boxes have nowhere to go. Within a week, the garage is overflowing again. After months in a dry, ventilated space, your belongings are in good shape. Make the most of it and decide what happens to them before you move them.
- Do a scouting visit. Spend an hour at your unit a few days ahead, open two or three boxes and see what really deserves the trip.
- Four piles: keep, donate, sell, throw away. The chest of drawers that fits nowhere will make a local charity or an online buyer very happy.
- Write the destination room on every box. "Kitchen", "office", "Léa's bedroom": when you unload, nobody has to ask where anything goes.
- Pack a "first night" box. Bedding, kettle, chargers, important papers. The one you always end up hunting for at 10pm.
- Plan a stop at the recycling centre. Whatever can't be given away or sold leaves with you anyway, so build it into the route.
Moving day at the facility
The date lines up with your notice and the vehicle is booked. All that's left is choosing the time. At Les Arènes, you can access your unit 24/7; at Anglet and Les Pontots, from 6am to 10pm every day, Sundays included. Plenty of scope to load early before the summer heat or after work, without taking a day off.
- Grab a trolley. Trolleys and hand trucks are freely available at our facilities: no more back-and-forth one box at a time.
- Know your facility. At Les Arènes and Les Pontots, the goods lift is self-service and you operate it yourself, with stairs alongside. At Anglet, everything is on the ground floor.
- Heavy first, fragile last. Furniture and heavy boxes at the back of the van, crockery and picture frames on top.
- One last look with your phone torch. The bag of screws in a corner, the dust cover that slipped behind the door: that's where they hide.
- A quick sweep and you're done. Bits of tape, bubble wrap, dust: you found a clean unit, and the next customer should too.
Move-out inspection, then your deposit
Just like on the day you moved in, there's an inspection when you move out. Book it with the team: it's quick, we look at the unit together and answer any last questions.
The deposit of one month's rent paid when you signed then comes back to you, together with the pro-rata refund for the days paid after you leave, by bank transfer, within 30 days of the move-out inspection. A unit handed back empty and clean is the best guarantee of a hassle-free refund.
Back to Saint-Esprit, sofa included
A Bayonne couple had stored their furniture and boxes at Les Arènes while they renovated their house in Saint-Esprit, on the other side of the Adour. They gave the team notice three weeks before the work wrapped up, popped in one Saturday morning to set aside what was going to a charity, then loaded everything on a Tuesday evening with two friends and the facility's trolleys. The inspection took a few minutes. The sofa was back in the living room that same night.
What if you just want a smaller unit?
Sometimes you're not really leaving. Some of your things have gone home, and the unit suddenly feels rather empty. Before you cancel, there's another option.
- Switching units is free during your rental: you move to a smaller space that matches what's left.
- You keep your extra room for seasonal gear, keepsakes or the piece of furniture still waiting for its spot, in a secure facility a few minutes from home.
- Your rent follows the new size: a smaller unit, a rent to match.
- We help you get it right: ask the team for advice, or estimate the volume you have left in a few clicks.
And whenever a new project comes along, our storage facilities in Bayonne and Anglet will still be here. Happy moving, and thank you for your trust.
