Getting your bike or scooter ready, step by step

• A clean, then a thorough dry. Mud, dust and above all sea salt when you ride along the Basque coast: a damp cloth followed by a good dry prevents rust on the chain and corrosion on the electrical contacts.
• A battery left around 50 %. That's the ideal level for long-term storage. Take it off the machine if the model allows, and keep it away from both frost and heat.
• Tyres inflated to maximum pressure. Nice and firm, they cope better with sitting still. Better still: hang the bike or rest it on its centre stand to relieve the contact points.
• A breathable cover, never a plastic tarp. A cover that lets air through keeps dust out without trapping moisture underneath, unlike a waterproof sheet.
• A solid lock, even indoors. A U-lock or chain secured to a fixed point adds real deterrence, wherever you keep the machine.
• Go vertical to save floor space. Wall hook or upright stand: every centimetre counts in a small space, so free it up.
