Insurance, Deposit, Notice: What You Sign When Renting Storage
No commitment, 15 days' notice, deposit, insurance: what you actually sign when renting a storage unit in Bayonne or Anglet, explained clearly, without jargon.
You've found the right size, the facility is just around the corner, and yet the contract is still sitting on the table. It's a hesitation we hear a lot at the front desk. The need itself is clear enough: a new-build flat in Anglet handed over without a cellar, a move that spills over, a garage in Bayonne that stopped fitting the car a long time ago. What holds people back are the questions. Am I tied in for a year? What charges will land the following month? Is my home insurance enough? Which documents should I bring? This practical guide walks through, clause by clause, what you actually sign when you rent a self-storage unit with Dans Mon Box.
Six things to check before you sign
- The commitment period. It's often the first worry, and rightly so: the minimum term, the notice period and what happens to a month already started should all be set out in black and white.
- The value of what you're storing. Work it out before choosing your insurance cover. Not after a claim.
- The deposit. How much, returned how quickly, and by what means? Three questions worth asking straight away.
- The direct debit date. It goes out between the 5th and the 12th of the month, so make sure your account is covered then.
- The documents required. Having them to hand on signing day saves you a second trip.
- The house rules. Who is allowed in, and can you switch sizes along the way? Better to know from the start.
What our contract says, clause by clause
Am I committed, and for how long?
For one month, and that's it. The first month is due in full; after that, the contract rolls over from one month to the next, with no maximum term. Some people keep their unit for a few weeks, just long enough for building work to finish. Others keep it much longer, because it has become their extra room away from home.
To leave, simply give 15 days' notice before the date you want to move out. That's all. And since rent is paid at the start of the month, any unused days are refunded pro rata. And if your needs change in the meantime, moving to a smaller or larger unit is free of charge, with no need to start over. Units start at €30 a month for the smallest ones; the breakdown by size is on our pricing page.
Insurance: compulsory, but the choice is yours
It's required, with cover of at least €5,000. You have two options. Either your own policy, often your home insurance, provided it covers belongings stored outside your home: a quick call to your insurer is enough to check. Or Dans Mon Box takes out the insurance for you, and it's simply added to your monthly bill:
- €5,000 of cover: €15 a month
- €10,000 of cover: €25 a month
- €15,000 of cover: €35 a month
- €30,000 of cover: €45 a month
To choose, add up what it would cost to replace your furniture, your appliances and the contents of your boxes. A sofa, a bed, a washing machine and an e-bike, and you're quickly close to the minimum level.
Deposit and payment: what goes out, and when
The deposit is equal to one month's rent and is paid when you sign. An inventory check is carried out when you move in, and another when you move out. Once that second check is done, the deposit comes back to you by bank transfer within 30 days, together with the pro-rata refund of any unused days you have paid for.
When you sign, you also pay the first month's rent, pro rata for the days left in the month you move in, plus that month's insurance, by bank card or in cash. After that, it's automatic direct debit, every month between the 5th and the 12th. Late payment charges are set out in black and white, with no grey areas: a €20 fee for a rejected payment, then 10% if the amount remains unpaid for more than 15 days.
The paperwork to bring
- Individuals: ID, proof of address and bank details (RIB).
- Companies: the director's ID, a K-bis company registration extract and bank details.
- Business address registration: ID, personal proof of address, the company's articles of association, a declaration of no criminal convictions and bank details (RIB).
You can book by phone or online, with no bank card needed. One detail worth knowing: if you sign on site, access is immediate; if you book online, access opens within 15 days at most, to allow for the cooling-off period. Is your move planned down to the day? Then it's best to come and sign in person.
The pitfalls we see most often
- Picking the minimum insurance on autopilot. When the unit holds an entire flat, €5,000 won't be enough. If in doubt, run the numbers again.
- Assuming your home insurance covers everything. Some policies stop at your front door. Ask for written confirmation.
- Remembering the notice period the day before you leave. Fifteen days go by fast. Put the deadline in your diary as soon as you know your date.
- Forgetting the debit date. A rejected payment costs €20. The debit goes out between the 5th and the 12th of the month: keep enough in your account to cover it.
- Lending out your access code. Sharing a unit isn't allowed and the code is strictly personal, even for a brother-in-law who's "just popping in for one box".
- Going too big, just in case. Switching units costs nothing. Start with what you need; you can always adjust.
These simple rules come with an equally simple setting: a clean, dry, ventilated building under video surveillance, with a private space that only you can open. And a real person to answer you before you sign. Our front desk is at the Les Arènes facility in Bayonne, open Tuesday to Saturday, from 9:30am to 12:30pm and from 2pm to 6pm. Come along with your questions, even the most down-to-earth ones.
Claire's story, between two flats
Claire was leaving a two-bedroom flat in the Cinq Cantons area of Anglet for a smaller place with no cellar, due to be handed over a few months later. Her fear: being locked in for a year. She rented a unit at our Anglet storage facility, entirely on the ground floor, which spared her carrying boxes up and down stairs. A call to her insurer confirmed her furniture was still covered. Once settled in, she gave fifteen days' notice and got her deposit back by bank transfer after the move-out inventory check.
